TROPICAL MALADY

Thailand, 2004 (MIFF 2004, Thai Breakers)

Director: Apichatpong Weerasethakul

Tropical Malady (Sud Pralad) Thailand/France/Italy/Germany

'all of us are by nature wild beasts and our duty as human beings is to become like trainers who keep their animals in check, and even teach them to perform tasks alien toothier bestiality.' -Ton Nakajima, novelist

Co-recipient of the Jury Prize at Cannes this year, Tropical Malady takes audiences on mysterious and sensual trip into the heart of desire. Highlighted by a dreamlike atmosphere and stunning photography, this bold new film from Apichatpong Weerasethakul (Blissfully Yours, MIFF 2003) journeys deep into Thailand's lush jungles where the line between myth and reality is often blurred.

Something magical is in the air; country boy Tong and young soldier Keng spend their evenings drinking, going to the movies and having fun. But a disappearance abruptly halts this idyllic life and news spreads that a wild beast has been slaughtering livestock. Local legend has it that a human can somehow be transformed into another creature'

'I realised that through cinema I could express something that I cannot possibly do through other means. Tropical Malady is channel to present my attachment to untouched landscapes and mysteries. It is memoir of love and darkness.' -apichatpong Weerasethakul
