Junebug

USA, 2004 (MIFF 2005, International Panorama)

Director: Phil Morrison

Junebug

Junebug is an emotionally rich tale of a dysfunctional family in America's South, whose resentments and repressions come out with the entrance of an outsider. The wonderfully understated and comedic Junebug screened at both the Sundance and Cannes film festivals, and features the music of Yo La Tengo. Chicago gallery owner Madeline is newly wed to George. To close a business deal with an eccentric artist from the South, Madeline, accompanied by George, travels to the artist's North Carolina hometown. The pair decides to call in on George's family, where they face a mixed reception. The provincial parents and hopeless younger brother, Johnny, are pleased to see George but are unimpressed with the urbane Madeline. Meanwhile, Johnny's heavily pregnant wife, Ashley, is in awe of Madeline's sophistication. Madeline is desperate to leave, but George - once only too keen to abandon his down-country roots - is seemingly enamoured with the innocence of his family, and questions where he belongs. As the characters struggle with the final claustrophobic days of Ashley's pregnancy, they discover that the art of loving is about accepting people for who they are.
