Australia, 2006 (MIFF 2006, Australian Showcase)

Director: Melanie Hogan

“Anyone coming cold to the story of Australia's Indigenous disgrace will no longer be ignorant after seeing this beautifully shot film.”- George Negus
A hard-hitting and necessary film, Kanyini (which means ‘interconnectedness' in Pitjantjatjara) looks at the world's oldest living culture in a way that's never been seen before.
Traditional owner of the Uluru lands and former Indigenous Person of the Year, Bob Randall, acts as our guide, explaining to us why Indigenous people are now struggling in a modern world and what needs to be done for Indigenous people to progress. As Randall explains, “The Earth is our Mother. That makes you and me - us - brother and sister.”
As a tale of Indigenous wisdom clashing against materialist notions of progress, this is not the story of one man and his people but the story of the human race, thus funda-mental for understanding contemporary Australia by looking backwards in order to move forwards.
