France / Greece / Italy, 2009 (MIFF 2009, International Panorama)

Director: Costa-Gavras

“A playful modern fairytale about a serious subject.” - Variety

Costa-Gavras (Z, Missing, Music Box) takes a different tack on the immigrant experience in Europe with Eden is West, a bittersweet comedy with a touch of magic realism.

Adrift in a rusty tanker headed for paradise, Elias (Riccardo Scamarcio, My Brother Is an Only Child) is one of many illegal immigrants making their way to the promised land of Western Europe. On arrival he finds opportunity, but also at every turn people eager to exploit him for profit or their own entertainment.

“A cross between the noble, wandering Ulysses and a Charlie Chaplin perpetually on the run from the cops.” - Hollywood Reporter
