How to Marry a Princess

Romania, 1959 (MIFF 1961, Programme 18)

Director: Ion Popescu Gopo

Once upon a time, there lived a beautiful princess. Suitors travelled from near and far to seek her hand in marriage, but she would have none of them, for her heart was won by a shepherd. One night the devil came and locked her up in a deep dark cave where she languished for many days until her shepherd found her, slew the devil, and won her hand from the King. So goes the old story and in this delightful colour film it is mimed against stylised settings with the tongue firmly in the check.
