When I Was A Girl

UK, 1989 (MIFF 1990, Fiction)

Director: David Yates

Memories of a 1940s girlhood are evocatively captured in this crisply matter-of-fact recollection of things past. A British working-class family, ruled by a domineering, hard-drinking patriarch, gets splintered into episodic bits and pieces which are recalled in plain-speaking voice over and photo album monochrome. The pains and pleasures of growing up poor (and more than a little neglected) come across with understated feeling and good humour. A miniature oral (and visual) history which is low on angst but high in stoic spirit.
