We the Ragamuffin

UK, 1992 (MIFF 1993, Youth Film Festival)

Director: Julian Henriques

Buckey Ranks is a talented musician dubbed the "original ragamuffin" — Ragamuffin is a musical style which originated in London and has its roots in the reggae of Jamaica and the rap of Black America. The film, set on location in London's Peckham estates — notorious for their poverty and violence — shows how Buckey and his friends triumph over their circumstances through music. Entertaining though enlightening, this is a first hand look at a neglected sub-culture.
