Japanese Cowboys

Australia, 1991 (MIFF 1991, Documentary)

Director: Stuart McDonald

You couldn't be further from the open plains, but that hasn't dimmed the enthusiasm of the guitar plucking, country singing cowboys of Japan.

Celebrating another example of the Japanese infatuation with American culture, this video introduces several serious devotees of the American Country and Western style, complete with western shirts and original guitars.

The filmmaker does not lampoon this obsession. In fact one feels that he is also of the same persuasion, and one only needs to see the Australian obsession with C&W (that incongruous cultural import) to appreciate the pervasiveness of this style world wide.

The filmmaker is having fun with the way that the Japanese, wholeheartedly embrace their obsessions and hobbies, and make them a way of life. Perhaps his sequel will be St.Kilda Cowboys. (GM)
