The Amateurist

USA, 1998 (MIFF 2000, Peepshow – Titillation & The Moving Image)

Director: Miranda July

The Amateurist slides along the edges of horror and satire to create an unsettling portrait of a woman on the brink of technologically-driven madness. Miranda July's performance is split between a tarty denizen trapped in a padded cell and neurotic mathematician who studies and narrates her activities. A video about surveillance, identity, watching and being watched. A captivating performance artist, Miranda July has recorded several performances available through Kill Rock Star records, has recently directed a clip for girl band Sleater Kinney and is currently developing a project with Wayne Wang and Paul Auster.
