BUNNY

USA, 2000 (MIFF 2001, International Panorama)

Director: Mia Trachinger

Nik and Luda are recent emigres to the USA following their hurried departure from an unnamed war-torn country. Arriving penniless in L.A. they lodge with a truculent friend of the family. Despite their education, they cannot secure employment. An old friend, Pecha finds them dubious employment with an experimental public works project, that ain't quite what they expecterj—sitting on street corners in huge pink bunny suits listening to the city's emotionally damaged population tell their tales of woe. while stroking their fur. Driven by a deadpan humour Bunny sees the absurd nature of North American society through the eyes of its central characters. The contemporary phenomenon of sharing without being involved on a fundamental level is mocked by the stark urban landscapes which dominate the film. Bunny boasts a striking visual style, eccentric plot and characters and a surreal tenderness. A hit at the Toronto and San Sebastian Film Festivals.

A surprisingly affecting film, whose cumulative power, as Luda and Nikolai's intimacy erodes, is deceptively profound."—LA. Weekly.
