TREMBLING BEFORE G-D

USA, 2000 (MIFF 2001, Documentaries)

Director: Sandi Simcha DuBowski

A remarkable documentary, winner of the 2001 Best Documentary award at the Berlin Film Festival, dealing with Hasidic and Orthodox Jews who come out as gays and lesbians and must reconcile their sexual orientation with the drastic discipline of their tradition.

They struggle with a way to negotiate their sexuality and identity within a deeply religious community and are forced to question how they can pursue faith in their lives. Trembling Before G-d gives us an opportunity to understand the way modern perceptions about sexuality have come to challenge entrenched religious views that condemn homosexual lifestyles forcing many gay people in Jewish communities into isolation We meet intolerant rabbis, narrow-minded family members and abandoned gays and lesbians struggling with the dilemma of remaining true to tradition and to themselves. Shot over five years in Brooklyn, Jerusalem, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Miami and London, the film is an international project with global implications that strike at the core of one of the world's major religions. A provocative look at issues that are seldom publicly discussed.
