Produced by Wong Kar-wai, cast with several of his favourite actors and spiked with parodies of his films, Jeff Lau's thoroughly entertaining Chinese Odyssey 2002, set in the Ming Dynasty, ruthlessly mocks martial arts cliches. Sneaking out of the Forbidden City to mingle incognito with her subjects, Princess Wushuang falls for outlaw King Bully. The trouble is the princess is disguised as a man so Bully sees her as a good match for his uptight tomboy sister,Phoenix. When brother Pnnce Wushuang heads a search party for his wayward sister events are further complicated by the intervention of guardian deity, Solid Gold Love! Selected for the Berlin Film Festival and recipient of the Hong Kong Film Critics Awards for Best Actress and Best Film.
