Director: Jean Baptiste Leonetti

“Jean-Baptiste Léonetti's mesmerizing first feature recalls the bitingly literate social commentary of Albert Camus, Aldous Huxley and Franz Kafka… with a little Terry Gilliam (circa Brazil) thrown in for good measure.” - Smells Like Screen Spirit

In a dystopian future that frowns, often violently, on individuality, the populace is reproducing too slowly and committing suicide too often. To make matters worse, those who don't excel become food - literally. Phillipe, having survived his own youthful suicide attempt, has been indoctrinated and is now one of society's strictest enforcers, testing the mettle of citizens with series upon series of bizarre challenges. Meanwhile, his wife is coming apart at the seams.

A love story at heart, Jean-Baptiste Léonetti's confident yet restrained first feature draws on everything from Soylent Green to Nineteen Eighty Four to Stanley Milgram's Obedience. Beautifully, atmospherically shot, it is full of tension tempered by pitch-black absurdist humour and it heralds the arrival of a bold new directorial voice. A must for fans of intelligent sci-fi.

“A nearly flawless film, one that rewards every bit as much as it challenges, Carré Blanc is quite simply one of the very best of the year.” - Twitch
