WE CAN'T GO HOME AGAIN

USA, 1976/2011 (MIFF 2012, Films on Film)

Director: Nicholas Ray

WE CAN'T GO HOME AGAIN

“The film (is) totally in line with what is fundamental in Nick's work - the emotional nakedness and courage, the search for the essence of the character.” - Susan Ray

For Nicholas Ray, director of Hollywood classics Rebel Without A Cause and Johnny Guitar, filmmaking was a way of life. It's no surprise then that when he took up a teaching post in 1971, he engaged his students by setting up a collaborative feature-length project, the result of which is We Can't Go Home Again. Artistically innovative and shocking, it experiments with split screen and multiple narratives whilst taking a close look at the ‘nameless' generation of the time, using his young protégés as his raw material.

Screening at Cannes in 1973 as a work in progress, We Can't Go Home Again remained predominately unfinished at the time of Ray's death in 1979. This restoration provides a rare opportunity to view the final work of a true maverick.
