Sweden, 2010 (MIFF 2011, TeleScope)

Director: Lisa Aschan

Winner of Best Film at the Tribeca Film Festival this year, She Monkeys is a nuanced and provocative study of young female desire.

In the height of the Swedish summer, 15-year-old Emma joins a local riding club and becomes embroiled in a disconcertingly intense friendship with the slightly older Cassandra. Meanwhile, Emma's eight-year-old sister, Sara, vies for the sexual affections of her babysitter. Lost in the hyper-sexualised churn of contemporary culture, the two girls find themselves immersed in dynamics that neither fully understands but to which both are irrevocably attracted.

From first-time director Lisa Aschan comes a claustrophobic, deeply unsettling exploration of the jumbled parameters of teen sexuality. A story told in piercing glances and unspoken secrets, She Monkeys is a taboo-breaking dispatch from the front lines of modern adolescence.
