Germany, 2011 (MIFF 2011, Prime Time)

Director: Christian Petzold

The first of the 'Dreileben' television series, a collection of three stand-alone films created by three prominent German filmmakers about a fictional small town plagued by an escaped criminal.

Working in a clinic as an intern, teenager Johannes finds love a struggle when he falls for Bosnian refugee Ana. As their romance flares, the lives of the entire town are turned upside down by the actions of a fugitive hiding in the local forest.

This contribution to the Dreileben project from filmmaker Christian Petzold (Yella, MIFF 2007; Jerichow) is an uneasy study of young romance, and a Hitchcockian exploration of a relationship that is not all it seems.

"With Petzold's cinema, there's always a sense of the mystical and uncanny, operating just beneath the surface of things... he's easily the most fascinating German director of his generation." - indieWIRE
