GREY MATTER

Rwanda / Australia, 2011 (MIFF 2011, International Panorama)

Director: Kivu Ruhorahoza

GREY MATTER

The first full-length feature film made in Rwanda by a Rwandan filmmaker.

With this groundbreaking debut feature, writer-director Kivu Ruhorahoza presents a multi-layered film within a film, where art mimics reality and, more disturbingly, reality begins to mimic art.

Grey Matter revolves around Balthazar, a young filmmaker frustrated by his inability to secure finance for his first feature film - a treatise on genocide and madness called The Cycle of the Cockroach. Angry at an industry that only wants to see African movies about AIDS, he starts preparing the film anyway, only to find the barriers between his cinema and his everyday life starting to break down.

Shot by Australian cinematographer Ari Wegner, with MIFF Accelerator alumni Dominic Allen producing, Grey Matter is bold and creative cinema.

A former children's television mascot, the puppet-like Blue has been largely forgotten by the world. Grappling with his own irrelevance and struggling to hold down a dead-end waiting job, Blue is shocked one day by some twisted, tragic news from his past.
