99 THE OCCUPY WALL STREET COLLABORATIVE FILM

USA, 2013 (MIFF 2013, Defying the Times: Activism on Film)

Director: Aaron Aites,Audrey Ewell,Lucian Read,Nina Krstic

"Possesses energy, passion … cataloguing the financial crimes, police misconduct, economic disparity and constitutional crises of the past several years makes for an emotional experience." – Variety

In the late summer of 2011, a social uprising started in Zuccotti Park, near Wall Street, New York. The Occupy movement spread like wildfire across hundreds of cities throughout the world. It was a direct response to the corporate greed and social inequality that purportedly led to the Global Financial Crisis.

99% is an expansive, unprecedented documentary that illustrates the motives and consequences of Occupy Wall Street while situating it within the context of resistance movements challenging top-down corporate and governmental hierarchies worldwide. Compiled from the collected footage of more than 100 contributors, including participants, supporters, critics and experts, and also featuring interviews with social commentators (author Naomi Wolf and social researcher Richard Wilkinson among them), the film is the definitive account of the often-misunderstood Occupy ideal, offering a fresh, insider perspective on its origins and insight into where it might be headed.
