France, 2013 (MIFF 2013, International Panorama)

Director: Arnaud Desplechin

"The Blackfoot believed that dreams foretold the future. We think that dreams shed a little light on the past."

Benicio Del Toro stars alongside Mathieu Amalric in this intriguing and subtle drama about an unconventional psychoanalyst and the broken veteran he hopes to heal. James Picard is a Blackfoot Indian scarred from his experience in WWII. His wide-ranging psychological symptoms baffle military doctors and so Picard is introduced to Georges Devereux in an attempt to unspool the mystery of his torment.

Inspired by a real life encounter, this adaptation of Georges Devereux's Reality and Dream by French master Arnaud Desplechin (Kings and Queen, MIFF 2005) is powered by the chemistry between its two leads as they pick through memories and dreams, and build an unlikely friendship.

"This demanding but highly absorbing two-hander showcases Benicio Del Toro and Mathieu Amalric at the top of their craft." – Variety
