ME AND EARL AND THE DYING GIRL

USA, 2015 (MIFF 2015, International Panorama)

Director: Alfonso Gomez-Rejon

"The Citizen Kane of teen cancer tearjerkers, Alfonso Gomez-Rejon's Me and Earl and the Dying Girl is like The Fault in Our Stars remade for Criterion Collection fetishists." – Time Out New York

Me and Earl and The Dying Girl is a uniquely funny and moving story about Greg, a high-school senior who avoids deep human relationships as a way to safely navigate the social minefield that is teenage life. In fact he describes his best friend, Earl, with whom he makes short-film parodies of classic movies, as being "more like a co-worker". But when Greg's mum insists he spends time with Rachel – a girl in his class who has just been diagnosed with cancer – Greg discovers just how powerful and important true friendship can be.

Debuting to a standing ovation at Sundance, where it subsequently won the Grand Jury Prize and Audience Award (US Dramatic), Me and Earl and the Dying Girl is a funny, bittersweet, pop culture-saturated delight based on Jesse Andrew's novel of the same name. Embracing common coming-of-age clichés while joyously subverting them, the film is a sure-fire crowd pleaser.

"Brimming with wit, crushing last-act melancholia, laughs, and poignant heart, Me and Earl and the Dying Girl is a spectacular delivery of tears, love and laughter, and a beautifully charming, captivating knock-out." – The Playlist

Please note that the session in Kino Cinema 2 on Sunday 16 August will have open captions on the screen for the duration of the film.
