Georges (Daniel Auteuil) and Anne (Juliette Binoche) live a model middle-class life in Paris, with their well-adjusted son, Pierrot. Georges is a TV host and Anne works in publishing. While there are no ripples mocking the glassy surface of these waters, a dark current runs beneath. One day, a videotape turns up on their doorstep, with footage of their house, along with a picture of a boy with blood coming from his mouth. When a second tape arrives, they call the police. But Georges' rising anxiety soon makes it clear he has secrets from his past to hide, and he visits Majid, an Algerian man of his own age, whose family worked for his own during France's repression of Algeria. When Pierrot fails to return home from school, the secrets of Georges' past begin to emerge.
Michael Haneke's [Hidden] is a tightly calibrated thriller with abundant suspense, for which he won Best Director and the Fipresci at Cannes this year. It is also a film with a social agenda. Casting this drama into the context of France's colonial past, it raises the issue of the urgent need to take responsibility for our actions.
