Leon is the kleptomaniac inmate of an asylum. Apart from theft, Leon has one obsession, Asa, his childhood sweetheart. A decade earlier they had arranged to meet on Leon's birthday if they wanted to marry. With that happy day upon him, Leon can think of nothing but Asa, who is speeding to Oslo.
Trygve is granted leave from prison to surprise his brother Leon on his birthday, but has plans to use the few hours of freedom for a crime spree. During the course of the day, the entire gang - plus suicidal ex-celeb Bobbie-Pop and a pair of grief-stricken parents trying to get money for an expensive operation - collide.
"One of the best Norwegian films made in many years, [Hawaii, Oslo] proves it's still possible to do exciting work in the sub-genre created by such exceptional pictures as [Short Cuts] and [Magnolia]. Lenser Ulf Brantas (who shot Lukas Moodysson's first three features) has created moody, stylised images of Oslo by night. Pace is fast without being forced and the film feels fresh and invigorating. A truly out-of-this-world final shot." - Variety --- D Eric Poppe P Finn Gjerdrum S Harald Rosenlow WS Trust Film Sales Aps L Norwegian w/English subtitles TD 35mm/col/2004/125mins
