[Brother to Brother] is the accomplished debut feature of the amply talented Rodney Evans, for which he won the 2004 Special Jury Prize at Sundance.
Perry is an articulate and politicised college student in New York. He is also a gay artist struggling to find his voice and struggling to negotiate the minefield of being black and gay. When he meets kindred spirit Bruce Nugent - the last survivor of the radical, black, boho community of the 1920s, the Harlem Renaissance - he finds true companionship and is able to reconcile the conflicting politics that mark his life. Shifting between contemporary New York and the 1920s, the latter through Bruce's memories of his anarchic youth with fellow black artists Langston Hughes, Zora Neale Hurston and Wallace Thurman, Evans delivers an intelligent and provocative picture of identity politics as they play out across the generations. He also delivers a loving paean to Bruce Nugent and the wonderfully bacchanalian Harlem Renaissance.
