Director Mohammed Naqvi will be a guest of the festival and will be introducing the first screening of Shame

This is the true story of a woman who fought back against a shameful perversion of justice. In June 2002, Mukhtaran Mai was publicly gang raped in her remote Pakistani village as punishment for a crime allegedly committed by her younger brother. Shunned by her village, usually the only recourse for Mai would be suicide. Instead, she sought justice against her attackers.

Mai's quest took her to the United States where the international press and human rights workers bolstered her cause. Her astonishing resilience eventually sparked upheaval in Pakistan's archaic judicial system and set an example for victims of sex crimes worldwide. “[Mai's] work - and the work of women like her - is not yet over. There is still plenty of shame to be faced and conquered.” - Toronto Film Festival
