The stories of these marvellous people who suffered so terribly as individuals yet eschew bitterness for warmth, generosity and a wonderful sense of humour are proof that, even in the darkest night, there is light. Filmmaker Paul Cox returns to the documentary form following his experiences of 1998 making Molokai, The Story of Father Damien. Having nurtured a friendship with the 32 remaining leprosy patients of the settlement of Kalaupapa on the island of Molokai, Cox was granted unprecedented access to record their stories and provide a glimpse of both the horrors and beauty of this small world frozen in time. For the people of Kalaupapa, this settlement became a permanent home even after the lifting of their quarantine in 1969 - a familiar sanctuary against an unforgiving world.
