Emmer's film on Picasso is on a larger scale than his previous work, and the considerable running time enables him to analyse and discuss the work of this controversial artist in some detail. The commentary (written, in part, by the painter Guttuso) endeavours to prove the "realistic" basis of much of Pi¬casso's work and is openly hostile lo the more abstract and formalislic phases. The method of presentation is clear and detailed and one has the opportunity of seeing some paintings which have hitherto beep hard to come bv. The final scenes showing the artist at work are not only rewarding in themselves, but. like Haesart's Visite A Picasso, provide an authentic record for future audiences.
