D.H. Lawrence's novel KANGAROO was based on his persona! experiences in Australia in 1922.

Richard and Harriet Somers decide to leave England and the ravages of post-war Europe for a freer and more tolerant world. Arriving in Sydney they are befriended by neighbours lack and Vicki Calcott. As their friendship grows, lack becomes impressed with Richard's intellect and writing skills. He introduces Richard to Kangaroo, the charismatic leader of "The Diggers", a secret fascist army, which includes among its aims. the smashing of the trade union movement. When Richard refuses Kangaroo's friendship, and The Diggers" go on a rampage of violence and terror, the Somers become threatened with the same crude political thuggery they had lef behind in Europe.
