In his most personal film, Mike Figgis has created a beautiful and multilayered work. The Loss of Sexual Innocence is a complex, yet powerfully emotive film with a segmented structure overarched by parable. The narrative follows Nic (Julian Sands) at various stages in his life—as a boy in colonial Kenya, an adolescent in 60s London and as a grown man working as a film ethnographer—and at each point chronicles formative incidents and sexual awakenings that influence his maturation.
