“They trick you into giving up your childhood with all these promises of adventure. Once you realize what you've lost, it's too late. You can't get it back.”

Several years in the making, David Robert Mitchell's debut film was chosen to represent the USA in the International Critics' Week section at Cannes. In contrast to the standard Hollywood coming-of-age film, Mitchell creates a natural aesthetic to encourage an engagement with the lives of a superbly chosen amateur cast of Detroit teenagers.

Seeking their own experiences and adventures (with the clichés of the final school summer prior to university acting on their expectancies), Maggie, Rob, Claudia and Scott find their destinies converge on one special night.

“Few US indie films since Michael Lehmann's Heathers have shown the originality of The Myth of the American Sleepover.” - Screen International
