The Australian Classification Board has granted MIFF special customs and censorship clearances for unclassified films. Anyone under 18 (including infants) is forbidden from attending these sessions.
The exceptions are films that have received classification and all films featured as part of the Next Gen program, which are approved for screening by the Classification Board. Next Gen screenings are open to all ages, but people under the age of 15 must attend in the company of an adult guardian. In order to assist parents, guardians and teachers in making informed decisions about children’s viewing, MIFF has provided suitability recommendations according to age group for Next Gen films yet to be classified.
The Australian Classification Board ratings G (General), PG (Parental Guidance) and M (Mature; not recommended for people under 15) are advisory categories. This means there are no legal restrictions about viewing these films. The MA15+ (Mature Accompanied; people under the age of 15 must attend in the company of an adult guardian) and R18+ (Restricted; anybody under the age of 18 is forbidden admission) ratings are restricted categories. This means there are legal restrictions on viewing these films. For more information about classification, visit the Australian Classification Board.
