Watch The Flick Trailer

In association with Red Stitch Actors Theatre, MIFF presents the Australian premiere season of the 2014 Pulitzer Prize-winning play The Flick.

Sam, Rose and Avery are the underpaid employees of one of the last remaining film projector cinemas in Massachusetts. They bicker, laugh and dream their way through shifts in the empty aisles. New kid Avery has an encyclopaedic obsession with film, and Sam has an unrequited obsession with Rose. Rose does what Rose wants to do.

Says Ella Cardwell, Red Stitch Artistic Director: "The Flick is a sensitive, loving portrait of real, imperfect lives; the little moments and big questions that we all grapple with. The struggles and hopes of these characters are sad and funny and very moving. Red Stitch ensemble members Ngaire Dawn Fair, Ben Prendergast and Dion Mills, with special guest Kevin Hofbauer, inhabit their roles beautifully, breathing life into Baker's words, and the result is magic."

With keen insight and a finely tuned comic eye, Annie Baker examines hidden corners of our existence, revealing the gems of truth that reside therein. And with Nadia Tass (Matching Jack, MIFF 10; The Big Steal, MIFF 90) directing, don't miss this 2014 Pulitzer Prize winning play about a cinema, performed by Australia's leading independent theatre company at a spectacular city venue.

“Funny, heartbreaking ... may be the best argument anyone has yet made for the continued necessity, and profound uniqueness, of theatre.” – New York Magazine
