Happy February, members! And what a February it is too, for we have some very special, very exciting news for you.
I am sure that many of you are familiar with the Astor Theatre in St Kilda. Since 1936 the Astor has been Melbourne's premier single-screen picture palace, showing classic films, cult favourites and new releases in beautiful Art Deco surroundings. It is a experience like no other to see a film at the Astor, and I'm sure many of our long-term members remember the days when the Astor was a MIFF venue.
Last year was a scary year for both the Astor and Melbourne's cinephiles, as we came perilously close to losing this grand dame forever as a cinema. But a new year brings new opportunities, and the Astor is looking to the future in bringing Melbourne the best in cinema, using the very best in projection technology, and ensuring that the public gets to see classic films where they belong, on the big screen.
Which is where all of you lovely MIFF members come in.

MIFF is pleased as punch to announce that the Astor Theatre has come onboard as a partner cinema for the MIFF membership program! That means that current members will now be able to gain concession entry to sessions at the Astor with your MIFF membership card (excluding special events).
Not only that, but the Astor will also be offering us special members screenings throughout the year featuring films from their premiere retrospectives seasons, where you will be able to experience beautifully restored classic films before anyone else!
So to celebrate this momentous occasion, we will be kicking off the partnership with a bang with a special members screening on Tuesday 26th of February of the new 4K DCP restoration of the Alfred Hitchcock classic NORTH BY NORTHWEST, thanks to our friends at Chapel Distribution!
If you would like to come along to the screening you will be able to book your seat from 11am Monday 11th February. Be quick, though, as there are only 300 spots available, and believe me, you don't want to miss out!
I certainly hope you will be able to join us in raising a choc-ice toast to the Astor on the 26th. Like Bogie and Bacall, Woody Allen and neurosis, and Cary Grant and crop-dusting aeroplanes, some cinematic unions are timeless, and we hope that the same can now be said for MIFF and the Astor.
Yours in classic film appreciation,
Hayley Inch, Membership Coordinator.

NORTH BY NORTHWEST
|
|
Undoubtedly one of the most fun thrillers ever made, North by Northwest is absolute entertainment. A caper of mistaken identity, Cary Grant is Roger Thornhill, a hapless New York advertising executive mistaken for a government agent by a group of foreign spies. Abducted and left for dead, foreign spy Phillip Vandamm (a slyly evil James Mason) and his henchman attempt to eliminate him, but when Thornhill tries to make sense of the case, he is framed for murder. Now on the run from the police, he manages to hop a train to Chicago where he meets a beautiful and typical “Hitchcock Blonde”, Eve Kendall, who helps him to evade the authorities. His world is turned upside down yet again when he learns that Eve isn’t the innocent bystander he thinks she is. Not all is as it seems, leading to a dramatic rescue and escape at the top of Mt. Rushmore.
One of MGM’s few movies to be shot in the expansive Vistavision format, North By Northwest features the trademark Saul Bass opening credit sequence, noted for its early use of kinetic typography.
Like Psycho (1960), Hitchcock’s North By Northwest features another of history’s most famous (and parodied) sequences – the ominous crop dusting plane that chases Grant across a barren field in the middle of nowhere. An addictively exciting thriller, it is full of that distinctive Hitchcock dry wit and spectacular use of location photography. We are pleased to present this motion picture classic with a brand new 4K DCP Restoration, screening for the first time in 4K format and 5.1 Surround Sound.
TUESDAY 26TH FEBRUARY 7PM at THE ASTOR THEATRE.
