2015 Photo Galleries

Actors Ewen Leslie, Odessa Young and Geoffrey Rush were guests of the festival for the The Daughter, and we've got photos! We will update the galleries throughout the festival with all our gala events, Talking Pictures panels and more.

International Panorama

Filmed entirely as a sequence of tableaux vivants – literally "living pictures" – In the Crosswind is a monumental film as photograph, utilising more than 700 actors to create awe-inspiring recreations of a real-life journey across Europe during WWII.

Talking Pictures

We all have a film we’re embarrassed to admit we like. Join comedians Lawrence Leung, Hannah Gadsby and Alan Brough, director Kriv Stenders (The Principal, MIFF 2015) and ABC's Zak Hepburn for Talking Pictures – Guilty Pleasures.

Australian Showcase

Constructed from seven years of reporting, and featuring harrowing first-person footage of combat, Only the Dead is Australian combat journalist Michael Ware's extraordinary expose of the distressing realities of far-flung conflict.

Drunk Stoned Brilliant Dead: The Story of the National Lampoon is an eye-opening and hilarious insight into the inception of one of America's most important comic institutions.

This Sporting Life

Meet the Middle East's first-ever all-female rally-racing team in Speed Sisters, "a refreshing stereotype-breaker and a vivid illustration of the diversity of the Palestinian experience." – Indiewire

MIFF Premiere Fund

In the MIFF Premiere Fund-supported Ecco Homo, Lynn-Maree Milburn and Richard Lowenstein paint an emotive portrait of Peter Vanessa "Troy" Davies, a man who could never come to peace with himself, but who found in chaos the key to his creative soul.

Night Shift

Visual effects powerhouse Jason Lei Howden (The Hobbit) makes his feature directorial debut with Deathgasm, a splatter-ridden horror/comedy tribute to the detuned malevolence of heavy metal and the gleeful gore of early Peter Jackson.

David Gulpilil Retrospective

Long overlooked, Dark Age re-emerged in cinema-going consciousness after Quentin Tarantino eulogised it in Not Quite Hollywood (MIFF 2008). And thanks to Tarantino loaning us his personal copy, MIFF audiences get a rare opportunity to see it on the big screen.

Accent on Asia

Coin Locker Girl is an unpredictably thrilling modern-day noir high in stakes and inventive, ferocious violence, assisted by explosive performances from its leading ladies.

Masters & Restorations

Grey Gardens "transformed the art and craft of documentary film … an otherworldly experience not quite like anything else in the history of cinema." – Salon

Culinary Cinema

"In a period when concerns about food and health are paramount, Good Things Await makes arguments for biodynamic principles and practices that are both logically and cinematically compelling." – Variety

Next Gen

"Superb … Song of Lahore is an exquisite reminder of what the function of art is in all cultures: to preserve, and celebrate, our humanity." – The Upcoming

Cited as a huge influence on everything from Monty Python's Flying Circus and Fantastic Planet to Sesame Street, South Park and The Simpsons, Yellow Submarine takes the Beatles' music at its psychedelic peak and creates a one-of-a-kind adventure that both evokes and transcends its time.

Sebastián Silva Retrospective

Sebastián Silva's hallucinogenic, goofy fable Crystal Fairy and the Magic Cactus follows an obnoxious American tourist and a self-styled hippie princess on an off-kilter drug trip through Chile.

Witness to the Fact: True Crime on Film

The Cult of JT LeRoy, about the bizarre, decade-long hoax that shamed the publishing industry and Hollywood, is "an utterly fascinating look at identity, gender, role-playing, fraud and deception." – Indiewire
