With its own b-boys, pop-lockers and skip-hoppers, Australian hip-hop has come a long way in the last few years. This energetic documentary charts its rise and draws out some of the unique elements of the local movement. With little of the gangster posturing of US hip-hop, Australian hip-hop is essentially a positive force, and its major artists reiterate this through the course of the documentary. Interviews with the Hilltop Hoods, Def Wish Cast, DJ Peril, The Herd, Danielsan from Koolism and Wicked Force Breakers paint a picture of a growing force in local culture. [Skip Hop] features no shortage of b-boy battles and live footage from prominent gigs around Australia, and tops things off with some wickedly funny MC Battles, featuring Melbourne's own MCs Surreal and Justice tearing into their interstate rivals for the national championship. Oriel Guthrie will be attending the festival. --- D/P/S Oriel Guthrie WS Oriel Guthrie TD video/col/2005/56mins. Her films are [AUST. vs NZ: MC Battle for Supremacy] (2004), [Skip Hop] (MIFF 05).
