Writer-director Fred Kelemen creates a brooding existentialist mystery in Fallen. As a cynical cop says, “Hundreds of people go by us every day and we take no notice of them. But if one of them dies, we start to be interested in them right away.” This is exactly what happens to a mopey archivist when he walks past a suicidal woman who jumps from a bridge in the middle of the night. Following her trail through letters, photos and her boyfriend, he attempts to rebuild this woman's life, not to solve any crime, but to assuage his own guilt.

Set on the edge of Europe, Fallen is a film steeped in sadness, emitting an East European atmosphere that already seems to belong to the past.
