Purportedly based on the courtship of the filmmaker's parents, this film experiments with narrative to tell a story twice - in radically different settings. Purportedly based on the courtship of the filmmaker's parents, this film experiments with narrative to tell a story twice - in radically different settings. The first part of Syndromes and a Century comprises the minutiae of events in the medical clinic of a rural village as applicants are interviewed to fill a job position and patients are treated. Halfway through the film, the setting changes to a modern hospital, with the same characters from the first half of the film transplanted to this new setting, repeating the same scenes. The new environment plays its own part in altering the personalities and interactions of the characters. With its dual narrative and lush visuals, the masterful Syndromes and a Century investigates the small turns of fate and circumstance that drive our personal histories. From the director of Blissfully Yours and Tropical Malady.
