“Inhabiting the territory between Chekhov and Strindberg, on coke.” - filmmaker Viesturs Kairiss Since 17 year-old Ria's traumatic birth, her mother hasn't spoken, living in an almost catatonic state in an attic where she is cared for by her husband's new girlfriend. The abnormal family unit survives by breeding animals. When the business fails, Ria's father decides to make money by allowing game hunters onto their property to hunt down the one thing she has an unbreakable bond with - her deer. An irrepressible wild child, the rebellious Ria faces the toughest decision of her life when the hunters arrive and the fight for her animals' lives begins. Viesturs Kairiss has adapted The Dark Deer from his own play of the same name, originally a novel by Inga Abele.
