In 1986, Melbourne Film Festival guest Robert Mugge presented four of his musical films. This year. Mugge is represented by his portrait of the jazz sax player Sonny Rollins. Part One of the film was shot at Opus 40, a sculptured rock quarry in upper New York State where Rollins performs with his band. Part Two documents the world premiere in Tokyo of Concerto For Tenor Saxophone and Orchestra, composed by Rollins and arranged and orchestrated by Finnish musician Heikki Sarmanto with the 100 piece Yomiuri Nippon Symphony Orchestra.

"Rollins inhabits the images of Saxophone Colossus as if they were his milieu, a celluloid nightclub in which he can take root. By the time the 101 minutes of this film have drawn to a close... one has the impression of knowing this man from A to Z. Colossal. Magnificent."
