New Sweden is a film about a group of young people in a modern Swedish suburb. 'The gang' in the film consists of about 30 individuals, their ages ranging from 14 to 20. Their existence is characterized by a lack of activities and contact with adults—instead they escape to each other. Pop music, beer and hashish are important parts of their togetherness.

This kind of youth culture is not a particularly Swedish phenomenon, but a result of the social and economic changes most industrialized countries have undergone. This 'development' has created societies from which many want to escape—these young people do it their way. They have formed a subculture within the society.
