This Hans Christian Anderson fairy tale is retold within a contemporary ambience of urban gloom and emptiness — the snowlined city square allows for jagged contrasts in the black and white photography. Poetic and hard edged in its presentation Red Shoes captures the exuberant and tragic tone of the original story. Rather than using a ballet score it is set to a harsh industrial soundtrack drawn largely from the music of Einsturzende Neubauten.
