The rapture with which this very strange film is concerned is the experience, anticipated by some fundamentalist Christians, of meeting Christ midway in the air upon his return to the Earth. (The saved are the first to leave Earth, spared Tribulation and Armageddon which follow.)

Written and directed by Michael Tolkin, author of The Player, The Rapture goes all the way with its born-again protagonist. Audiences may be exhilarated or infuriated by her headlong excursion into the hereafter, but it's impossible to imagine an audience that won't be amazed by Tolkin's radical response to the overwhelming rise of Christian fundamentalism in the US.
