After surviving in secret over several decades, the love between two older women is tested.

Madeleine and Nina, both in their 70s, are the only residents on the top floor of their building. For many years, they’ve effectively been living together, moving between their respective apartments and spending their nights in Madeleine’s bed. However, after a significant event places barriers on their time together, the couple must confront the consequences of discretion and denial – including family members who’ve been kept in the dark.

Met with rapt reviews following its screenings at the Toronto, London and Rotterdam film festivals, Filippo Meneghetti’s debut feature is a masterclass in empathetic storytelling. Depicting the torment of having the bubble of romance burst by external pressures, Two of Us leans on genre – the melodrama of secrets divulged – yet ultimately revels in an accomplished restraint. Anchored on the moving performances by leads Barbara Sukowa and Martine Chevallier, this is a film about intimacy, the grief of separation and the ties that bond two people despite everything.
