TUDOR

This large scale production deals with Rumanian history during the first half of last last century, and shows the struggle of the people for liberty against the oppressive Boyars and Turks.

In 1812, Tudor Jadimirescu returns to his name village after vicioriously fighting the Turks in the Russo-Turkish war. He is appointed governor of a region bordering on Tukey, with the task of defending the Rumanian principality from the attacks of turkish brigands. He proves himself full of an initiative which meets with the constant opposition of the ruling Junto and is sent to Vienna where the Congress of Ihe Holy Alliance is to take place. Here he extracts from Czar Alexander of Russia a rather vague promise of Russia's support for a movement of national liberation by Rumanians. Subsequent events convince him that the movement cannot base itself on the Boyars.

Tudor eventually organises an army capable of unleashing a great popular uprising. In 1821, he forms an alliance with the Greeks against their common enemy, their Ottoman overlords. As the army of Tudor enters Bucharest, the tenacious Boyars continue their intrigues which successfully result in his death.
