First released in 1978, the near-forgotten classic surf movie [Many Classic Moments] all but disappeared after its successful initial screenings. Now it's back, better than ever, a remastered time capsule by Australian Gary Capo that celebrates the corporate-free and totally mellow surf culture of the 1970's.
Starting from Malibu, via Sydney's many breaks and eventually settling in the famed warm waters of Hawaii, [Many Classic Moments] not only features kicker surf footage but captures the simple, irrepressible joy and camaraderie of surf culture - big-haired surfies, small-bikinied chicks, sun, sand and fun, fun, fun. A (possibly) tongue-in-cheek narrator introduces some of the great characters of the era - Dane Kealoha, Mark Lidell and 'Buttons' - and wisely reminds us that "there's more to surfing than smooth rides"; with a straight face, he prefaces a series of gnarly wipe-outs with, "People often ask what happens to these surfers' They die..." The soulful, thoroughly 70s' soundtrack is provided by Kalapana and - somewhat hilariously - the London Symphony Orchestra.
