The beautiful 22-year-old Eva is stuck in a go-nowhere job and the lout to whom she has become pregnant has left her. With few options open, she chooses to terminate the pregnancy. On her way to the clinic, Eva is mugged by a desperate junkie, Michal, who makes off with her money and thus directs her life on a new course. Set in a grim urban landscape - compounded by an evocatively sombre colour palette - [Stranger] follows the emotional journey of Eva, who keeps her unborn child and provides it with something of a pre-natal education. But fate has it that not only the child comes into her life but also Michal, who precipitated her keeping the child and who may just be her guardian angel.
Director Malgosia Szumowska was nominated for the Sundance Grand Jury Prize for this affecting film, which charts a young woman's discovery of love, self-assurance and her place in the world.
