[Pink Ribbon] chronicles the rise and precarious survival of the least prestigious genre in Japanese cinema: the soft-core sex movie, also known as the pink film. [Pink Ribbon] surveys all angles of the industry via some of its most famous and prolific directors, as well as its stars, distributors and keenest fans. We meet Kurosawa Kiyoshi, who like many other 'legitimate' directors first learnt about filmmaking in this arena. He is evidently still conflicted over these early films, particularly his 1985 erotic comedy, The Excitement of the Do-Re-Mi-Fa Girl. We also meet unrepentant veteran Wakamatsu Koji, who holds pleasant memories of his time in the industry, and ex-terrorist Adachi Masao, who spent 28 years with Palestinian guerrillas in Lebanon after a successful career as a pink director. As well as capturing some of the tricks of the trade and no end of funny anecdotes, [Pink Ribbon] includes, in case you're wondering, a selection of clips from the genre's finest examples.
