To satisfy his curiosity, a teenaged Townes Van Zandt leaned back over a balcony, falling four floors to the ground below. This is the man who was declared a songwriting genius by the likes of Steve Earle, and it signals the nihilism and psychic pain that shaped his life and his music. Born to money, Van Zandt turned his back on privilege and led the life of an itinerant artist. His life was racked by depression and a predilection for self-destruction, but until his death, in 1997, he was compelled by musical expression. In her remarkable Be Here to Love Me, Margaret Brown has fashioned a tender tribute to this master, for whom she clearly has great empathy and respect. Brown assembles rare archival footage, heartfelt interviews, wonderful concert recordings and even home videos to build a layered portrait of the man known as 'the songwriter's songwriter'. It is shot by longtime Richard Linklater collaborator, Lee Daniel.
