“A production of startling audacity and aesthetic provocation... if (director, James) Longley's astonishing feat of poetic agitation has a precedent in the entire history of documentary, I'm not aware of it.” - Village Voice Iraq in Fragments illuminates post-war Iraq in three acts, building a vivid picture of a country riven by religious and ethnic divisions. Filmed verité style, but with a rare sense of the poetic, the film explores some ordinary Iraqi lives: People whose beliefs, aspirations and concerns are at once personal and illustrative of larger issues in Iraq today. Part One follows Mohammed, an 11-year-old auto mechanic in the heart of old Baghdad, who idolises his domineering boss in the absence of his own (missing) father. Part Two is filmed inside the Southern Shiite movement of Moqtada Sadr. Part Three explores the Iraqi Kurdish bid for independence as seen through the eyes of an elderly farmer and his colleagues. A tour de force of documentary filmmaking. Winner of Best Director and Best Cinematography (Documentary) at Sundance, 2006.
