In the USA, a shadowy, anonymous group controls what the population may or may not view. It isn't the CIA or the Masons; it's the Motion Picture Association of America.
Responsible for rating all films shown in the USA, the MPAA has never divulged its rating guidelines, refuses to disclose the identity of its board members and is essentially unaccountable for its decisions.
Veteran documentarymaker Kirby Dick sets out to expose this secretive organisation, teasing out the hypocrisy and inconsistency in its decisions and even hiring a private detective to ferret out the identities of the anonymous board members. We are also treated to a hilarious peek at the MPAA ratings process when Dick submits this documentary for review and then appeals the NC-17 rating he's inevitably given.
Featuring interviews with a range of filmmakers, including John Waters, Kevin Smith and Darren Aronofsky, This Film is Not Yet Rated is an insightful and comical investigation into an organisation accustomed to operating beyond the bounds of accountability.
