NEXT: A Primer on Urban Painting is a documentary exploration of the global graffiti movement, a phenomenon that was born on the streets of the Bronx and has come to influence youth culture all over the world.

Filmmaker Pablo Aravena travelled around the world for two years to document the wildly divergent array of styles on the walls of the world's graffiti capitals.
While it has become an international presence, at the same time, graffiti still retains local accents - from New York to London, from the extravagant lines and colours of Brazilian graffiti to the minimalism of Tokyo street art. NEXT conveys the dynamism and creative brilliance of this important emerging artistic movement.

Combining verité visual moments and interviews with painters, journalists, collectors, sociologists, DJs, art critics and other participants within the subculture, the film shows the passage from an underground activity to a mature artform that has found its way into art galleries worldwide, giving us an insight into this vital evolution.

Director Pablo Aravena is a guest of the festival and will introduce the screening on Friday 4 August, 5pm at Greater Union.
